What Is Chunking in AI?

DEFINITION

Chunking is the process of splitting large bodies of information like documents, articles, and data sets into smaller elements for processing. This is an important step in AI, for example, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). What makes it impactful is the ability to bifurcate the large document into smaller chunks, making it easier for indexing, search, and better syncing with language models. Now these chunks can be easily separated through sentence breaks and document structure.

Why Chunking is Important

  • Increased search results – Helps AI find the right passage of information.
  • Context management – Ensures valuable information fits inside the model.
  • Improved processing – Large documents become easier to index.
  • Improved answers – If well structured, can ensure the right meaning is retained.

When to use chunking

  • To split enterprise documents to create knowledge assistants using RAG.
  • Create long PDFs and manuals for semantic searching.
  • Split text into chunks to create embeddings.
  • Process long documents.
  • Structure product documentation for an AI customer service assistant.
