What Are AI Guardrails and How Do They Work?

DEFINITION

AI guardrails are guidelines, controls and technical measures that ensure that an AI stays within certain safety, security, quality and business parameters. They can be applied at numerous stages throughout an AI process. This could be at the input stage, model, tool and output. Depending on how they are set up they can identify harmful queries, validate responses, secure data, limit access to tools and require manual authorisation.

Importance

  • Ensures outputs are less likely to be harmful
  • Secure data by ensuring confidential/personal data is not shown
  • Ensure AI follows company policies
  • Limit major actions and allow for manual review.

Use Cases

  • Act as a barrier for AI chatbots to showcase any sensitive or confidential data.
  • Filter out harmful queries and prompt injections.
  • Verify AI responses follow certain rules.
