DEFINITION
This refers to the process of generating, storing, sharing, monitoring and rotating your API keys which are used for authenticating your applications and services. These keys can be used by systems to identify authorised clients who are making an API call including AI models, cloud platforms and business applications. By having a good policy in place around your API keys you’ll secure access by keeping them safe, only allowing certain people access, monitoring their use, adding an expiry date and regularly rotating them.
Why is API Key Management important?
- Security – Helps reduce unauthorised access to your API
- Access control – Ensures only approved applications and services can use your API
- Monitoring – Helps find any anomalous activity
- Cost control – Prevents unauthorised use of your API which can lead to increased costs.
Use cases of API Key Management
- Protecting your API for AI Models and Generative AI.
- Managing API Credentials across Cloud Applications and Microservices.
- Rotation of keys for staff leaving or potentially compromised credentials.
- Monitoring API usage across development, test and production.
